US Considered Additional 7.5% Tariff on Chinese Goods
The US is reportedly considering an additional 7.5% tariff on Chinese goods, potentially bringing total tariffs imposed during the second Trump administration to around 20%. The final tariff rate has yet to be decided, with one option involving a higher nominal tariff with part of the levy suspended to result in an effective 7.5% rate. The policy could be announced ahead of the Trump-Xi meeting in September and is linked to US allegations of China's excess manufacturing capacity. The tariff would be implemented under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 and comes as the two countries discuss extending their one-year trade truce, which is set to expire on 10 Nov-26. (Kontan).
